March 30, 2008

Carl Story was born on May 29, 1916 in Lenoir, North Carolina. He moved to Lynchburg, Virginia early in the 1930’s to host his own radio show. He left in 1935 to join a group in Spartanburg, South Carolina called “The Lonesome Mountaineers.” From there Carl formed a new band called “The Rambling Mountaineers” and played several radio stations and made personal appearances throughout the South.

Singing mostly bluegrass, Carl became one of the pioneers along with Bill & Charlie Monroe, and the Stanley Brothers. In fact, Carl played fiddle for Bill, but had to leave to join the navy.  After his discharge from the navy, he reformed his band and returned to play many radio stations.  In 1947, he began recording for Mercury and in 1952 moved to Columbia Records.

Carl passed away March 30, 1995.
