Story Behind The Song … “You Don’t Love Me Anymore”

March 21, 2008

According to record producer David Malloy, Eddie Rabbitt’s 1978 number one hit record, “You Don’t Love Me Anymore,” was part of Malloy’s plan to “change country music!”

David says “I just didn’t like the country music my dad listened to when I was growing up. And I decided that someday I would change it.  So, when I began producing for Eddie Rabbitt, we tried to produce pop records that could get played on country music radio stations.  And to do that, we had to figure out  how to get records on the country charts and then cross over to the pop music charts.”

“But a lot of older country radio DJ.’s didn’t like our new kind of country music and refused to play it on the air.” “You Don’t Love Me Anymore” was the first country recording to include synthesized syndrums on it.

The song was Eddie Rabbitt’s 11th chart record and his second number one. It entered the country music charts June 10th, 1978 and was in the number one slot the week of August 12th.

The song was written by Alan Ray and Jeff Raymond. The record was produced by David Malloy. It was on the country charts for 14 weeks and also scored a # 53 on the pop music charts.
