Skeeter Bonn was born Junior
L. Boughan in Sugarville, Illinois on April 6, 1923. He became
interested in yodeling early in life and in 1949 he won the
Illinois championship as a singer. Eventually, Skeeter would
record for RCA Victor Records. He loved to sing.
I first met Skeeter while
doing shows for radio station WHO in Des Moines, Iowa in 1951.
Skeeter was also one of the headliners as a solo singer. We
both were featured on the Iowa Barn Dance Frolic, which was
produced by the radio station.
It is my understanding that
Skeeter left WHO and went to WLS’ National Barn Dance in
Chicago and WLW’s Midwestern Hayride in Cincinnati, Ohio. I
have no idea how long he worked at these places, but I caught
up with him at WWVA’s Wheeling Jamboree in 1953.
While in Wheeling in 1956,
Skeeter recorded two songs for my record label, Admiral
Records. They were “Chained” and “Love Call,” both written by
Mary L. Strode.
When Skeeter left the Wheeling
Jamboree, he toured throughout the Northeastern states and
landed somewhere in Maine. I have no idea how long he worked
there.
Skeeter Bonn passed away on
November 6, 1994.
