According to Pete Graves, the
1950’s hit song, Bumming Around,” came from another song he
had written during his rodeo days around White Salmon,
Washington.
Graves commented, “I had
written a few rodeo songs before that one. I borrowed part of
the lyrics from one of those rodeo songs and added a new tune
and titled the
song ‘Bumming Around’ in 1946. I was working
with a dance band by that time and the new song was easier to
dance to and the people seemed to like it.”
“Bumming Around” became
Jimmy Dean’s first chart song. It entered the country music
charts March 7th, 1953 and peaked at # 5. It was on
the country music charts for 7 weeks.
T. Texas Tyler also scored a #
5 hit on the song that same year. It was his 7th
charted song and was on the charts for 15 weeks.
