According to
Hank Cochran, some songs just come out of nowhere. And “I Fall
To Pieces” was just such a song. Hank commented, “I don’t know
where that song came from. It just came in my head one day and
there it was. I’m in the car a lot and I don’t listen to radio
and I was running back and forth from Goodlettsville to
Nashville…you know…three or four times a day and back then
there wasn’t any freeways at all….so it was either Dickerson
Road or Gallatin Road all the way into town which was about 20
miles or so…plus all the red lights and all that…and the
traffic. So the idea just came to me one day when I was in the
car and when I got to the office, I would sit down, work it
out and write it down. So that’s the way I wrote that song.
It just happened and I wrote it down.”
“I Fall To
Pieces” entered the country music charts April 3rd, 1961 and
made it to number one, where it stayed for two weeks. It was
Patsy’s 3rd chart song and was on the charts for 39
weeks. The Decca Records single also scored a # 12 on the pop
music charts. The master was remixed with added orchestra and
chorus and re-released in 1980 and that version peaked at # 61
and was charted for 7 weeks.
Thru the miracle
of modern electronics, the voices of Patsy Cline and Jim
Reeves were paired on a recording of the song. That version
peaked at # 54 in 1982.
